
Julie London (nee Peck, September 26, 1926 - October 18th, 2000) is an American performer and actress. Her career spanned more 40 years. London was a torch-singer and was well-known for her soft, smooth voice. She recorded more than 30 albums of pop and jazz classics from 1955 until 1969. Her rendition of "Cry me a river", a track she introduced on her debut album, was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. London was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for her performance as Dixie McCall, a nurse in the show Emergency! London was born in Santa Rosa to vaudevillian parents. Her career began acting as an actress as she worked as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles. London's career in acting lasted 35 years. It began in 1944 , with roles in films. This included roles as the female lead in a variety of westerns. London also starred alongside Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951), John Cassavetes and Robert Taylor in Saddle the Wind (1958), Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) and Robert Mitchum with The Wonderful Country (1959). She signed a recording deal with Liberty Records in the mid-1950s. This was the start of her professional music career. She released her final studio album in 1969, however, she was able to continue to make a name for herself as the lead female character of nurse Dixie McCall in the television series Emergency! (1972-1979) during which she was co-starring alongside Bobby Troup. Jack Webb, her ex-husband also produced the show.
